Pick Up Trucks, Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta |
A year ago, I moved back home from
Toronto. In the 8 months, I lived
in TO. I had seen less pick up trucks
then I have fingers. In the
airport parking lot, I found six of
them, parked like a formation of
planes or geese. My friend even drove
me home in a shiny new, Ford
150. Why is this? Is it the resource
economy, meaning more work done
on farms, oilrigs, construction sites,
mines and other areas that
require heavy equipment with boxes on
the back to move shit. There is
also recreation: hunting, snowmobiling,
or ATVs all have similar
needs. However, it also seems to be
butch an extension of egos and
penises. People are proud of their
trucks out here, and there is a
whole corpus of legend about them,
conversation about nice trucks that
don't do any work, or trucks that look
barely able to move, these
described in the loving terms of a
junkyard dog.
